Where
do gorillas live? |
There are three types of gorillas.
They live near each other in equatorial Africa.
- Mountain gorillas: Half of the
mountain gorillas live in the Virunga Volcano mountain range,
which is between Rwanda, The Democratic Republic of the Congo,
and Uganda. Because it is in the mountains, the rain forest is
cloudy and cold. The other half of the population lives in lower
altitudes in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of Uganda.
- Eastern lowland gorillas live
in The Democratic Republic of the Congo.
- Western lowland gorillas are
widely distributed throughout Central Africa. It is only the
western lowland gorillas that you will see in zoos.
Both eastern and western lowland
gorillas live in a tropical rain forest. It is warmer than the
mountain rain forest.
Some people think that gorillas
live in jungles, but there are no jungles in Africa.
Activity/Links:
On a blank map of Africa, color
in the areas where the three types of gorillas live. Make each
area a different color. Use an atlas to find the countries, forest,
and mountain range mentioned.
