Body Bag -- Your Human Skin
Did you know that your body has an organ called skin that is very complex?
Some background information for you ...
- Did you know that your skin is made up of many layers? The epidermis is the top layer that you can see. The dermis is under that. There is a layer of fat under that! And underneath it all, you'll find the muscle layer.
- Your skin reconstructs itself every few weeks as the dead old cells are rubbed off. Talk about dry skin .... you got it!
Thick or thin, now you're in ... for fun with skin!
Here's a question for you:
How many different kinds of skin prints can you find on your own body?
Procedure:
- Rub some soft pencil lead onto a sheet of paper until you get a big black blob.
- Pick up a good smudge on your finger.
- Carefully cover your smudged finger with clear tape.
- Pull the tape away from your finger and press it onto a clean sheet of paper.
- Try the same procedure with another finger, a nose, an elbow. You decide! Try and think of as many creative places to capture on tape.
- After you are done, try and organize your collection in a creative way. Label the prints. Some possible ways of organizing could include: smooth areas, pleats and folds, tracks and ridges.
- Clean up you and your work areas.
