Bones Aren't All They Are Cracked Up to Be

Here's a question for you:

Why are bone so strong?

Kids try the experiment

Procedure:

  1. Clean one chicken bone (wing or wishbone).
  2. Allow the bone to dry over night. Spend a few minutes observing how the bone feels to the touch.
  3. Get a medium sized jar with a lid.
  4. Place a chicken wing bone or a wishbone in the jar.
  5. Pour enough vinegar to cover the bone completely.
  6. Secure the lid and allow the jar to stand undisturbed overnight.
  7. Remove the bone and rinse with water.
  8. Test the flexibility of the bone at this time.
  9. Refill and repeat procedures for seven days.
  10. Log your ideas daily. What do you notice from day to day?

Why does leaving the bone in the vinegar change its strength? What is being removed?
