Girls Do Science Club
"Today's girls are tomorrow's scientists"
Watch for the return in fall 2008.
The solution to adult problems tomorrow depends on how our children grow up today.
The Girls Do Science Club, which is a part of the Orpheum Children's Science Museum, gives girls opportunities to learn about different areas of science from the women who perform this important work, in a fun and interactive environment. We hope you show your support of science education by joining our club, or by donating your time or financial support.
The spring 2008 schedule included:
Rocket Science
Trip to UIUC Aerospace Engineering Lab
UIUC Veterinary Hospital
The Amazing Atom
Trip to Fermilab, Batavia, IL
The Girls Do Science Club links girls with the many science and math learning opportunities in our community. Small groups meet monthly to visit with scientists, engineers, and doctors and go together to science events going on all over C-U. Destinations have included the Anita Purves Nature Center, local farms and prairies, the Beckman, Staerkel Planetarium, Audubon bird events, and Nature Conservancy field trips. The Club has also scheduled trips to some nearby big city museums.
The program meets once a month. The first meeting consists of a lesson or activity to introduce a scientific topic. The lessons center around an experiment for hands-on learning. These sessions meet at the Orpheum Children's Science Museum.
The second meeting includes a field trip to a lab, business, or organization where women scientists talk to the girls about their field of work. The lessons will complement the field trip topic, so the girls have more background knowledge and can interact as active participants during the field trip.
Other extracurricular field trips may include day excursions to museums or research centers in Chicago.
Members receive a regularly updated listing of these science events, the only central listing available in our community! They also earn annual recognition prizes for participation.
