Mid-19th Century Carbondale & Unity Point School History Mrs. Duncan's & Mrs. Sisk's Third Grade Classes Summary of Activities: -Introductory presentation on the history of Carbondale. -Used our web pages for whole class presentation on the large overhead monitor. Included in this presentation were items and descriptions from the Early American Museum of agricultural tools, clothing, pottery, and dishes of that era. We also used the web pages to view early schoolhouses, Woodlawn Cemetery (where Memorial Day started), and historical buildings of Carbondale. -Last year's MIC participant presented Hyperstudio project of Carbondale history on the large overhead monitor. -Throughout rest of unit, students engaged in exploring our MIC web site, linking to the City of Carbondale web site, and the Early American Museum in Mahomet, IL. -Took field trip to SIU-C Museum to view dioramas and artifacts from this era. Also took pictures with Quick Take camera to later be used in the project. -Talked about dioramas we had viewed, focusing on what might be included in a good diorama. -Provided engaged learning activities on making dioramas with the help of a local expert from the SIU Theater Department. -Assigned student diorama projects depicting local area history. -Students engaged in photographing their completed dioramas with the Quick Take camera. Later they will assist in adding these pictures with descriptions to our web site. As soon as connectivity is established, we hope to begin video conferencing with the Early American Museum and other MIC schools. |
