Lesson Plan from Cahokia High School

Ecology of Wetlands Lesson Plan--- Wetland Scavenger Hunt

(Note- The following lesson plan is designed to use technology in the quest to differentiate between the different types of wetlands depicted in the paintings in Krannert Art Museum.

The lesson is multidisciplinary and includes Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
Goals and Objectives are listed for the lesson plan.

Arts and Humanities are also included in the project, but it was designed to meet the needs of our "team" goals for Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Multidisciplinary Goals and Objectives

Language Arts

Goal: Write standard English in a well-organized and coherent manner to describe various wetlands.
Objectives: Describe and interpret types of wetlands.

Math

Goal: Understand and use ratios and percentages of wetland areas.
Objective: Calculate the area and determine the percent of the picture that indicates wetlands.

Biological and Physical Sciences

Goal: Learn the concepts and basic vocabulary of biological, physical, and environmental sciences.
Objective: Students will be able to list wetland characteristics using the proper vocabulary and be able to identify those characteristics in a picture.

Social Studies

Goal: Apply the skills and knowledge gained in the Social Sciences to decisions you would make in real life situations.
Objective: Describe laws that would govern wetland protection and identify global consequences of loss of large percentages of the Earth's wetlands.

Procedure

1. Students will research paintings at Krannert and identify 10 paintings with wetlands characteristics.
2. Students will list the name of the painting and type of wetland depicted (open water, marsh,etc...).
3. Students will calculate ratios and percentages of wetlands depicted in pictures.
4. Students will identify social implication involving wetland preservation.
5. Students will prepare a written report to address all the above disciplines.
6. Students will present the project to the class.
