Steerhorn Chair
This Victorian upholstered steerhorn chair has 2 horns as arm supports and 2 horns along the chair back. The legs are steer hooves. The two in the front are visible. This chair was originally bought by Benjamin F. Harris in the 1880s in Texas. Harris was one of the largest cattlemen in the nation.
This chair was part of a fad for decorating with mementos of the wilderness from about the 1860s until after the 1900s. It was primarily a western fad but a lot of the chairs were built in Boston. Chairs were also made of elk or deer antlers or elephant tusks and feet. The number of horns used varied and sometimes the chair was not upholstered.
Presidents Lincoln and Roosevelt were given ones as gifts.
