Goods and merchandise used and bought in east Central Illinois were often
manufactured in the east and even Europe. Goods
from Europe arriving on the east coast found their way across the country
by wagon or steamboat.
Wagons hauling these goods followed the National Pike or the Wilderness
Road.
Steamboats used the Mississippi, Ohio, Illinois, and Wabash
Rivers.
Large crates like this were used for packing store goods. This crate
in the Early American Museum's collection is around 150 years old.
