Goods From Europe

Some of the products that found their way into homes on the Illinois frontier started their journey in Europe. The goods traveled by ship across the Atlantic into ports such as New York, Philadelphia, Boston, or Salem and from there traveled by wagon, steamboat, or canal boats to stores such as Mr. Alexander's. The ads below show a listing of goods newly arrived from England.

This ad is from the October 5, 1821 issue of The Salem Gazette. If you compare this ad to Mr. Alexander's ad on his home page you will see many of the same items.

Matthew Lodge placed this ad in the Independent Chronicle of Boston, Mass. on July 27,1812. Although this ad is hard to read you can easily make out the words "a fresh supply of English Goods" at the top of the ad.
