Tucking Combs
Women on the Illinois frontier were just as concerned with style as those
in the east. Fancy fabrics, bonnets, ribbons, shoes, and adornments were
all a part of being in fashion. Decorative hair combs were not only useful
but beautiful and fashionable as well. Knowing this, Mr. Alexander kept
a stock of tucking combs as well as other combs in his store. A lot like
today, the amount of money a person had to spend determined how fashionable
they might dress.
These mid-nineteenth women's hair combs are made from tortoise shell.
