Job Bingo
Objective:
Students will be able to identify jobs in the community by description.
Materials:
Paper cut into even strips, pencils, bingo grid, scrap paper to be used for markers.
Procedure:
Have a class discussion about various jobs people do in the community. Start by asking what parents, grandparents, and neighbors do. Ask questions about other jobs not mentioned to get as long a list as possible. Write down the list on the board as you go. As each job is mentioned have the students talk about what it is that the person does on the job. (i.e. a bus driver drives a bus, picks people up and takes them where they want to go. They also follow a certain route.)
Break students into small groups or pairs and assign 2 or 3 jobs to each group privately. Each group then writes down at least three descriptions of their assigned job, one per strip. While the students are working prepare the bingo grids by writing down the name of the jobs in various squares. Make several different ones.
To play the game, place all the descriptions in a bowl or hat and mix them up. Read out the descriptions one at a time. The students need to recognize which job goes with the description and place a marker on that square. Play until one student has won BINGO or continue on until all the strips are gone.
